Downtown Condo: A Muji-inspired condominium apartment with shoji doors

Inspired by the lifestyle brand Muji, this apartment features wood finishes and Japanese interior design ideas, transforming into the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life in Singapore. Woodgrain finishes are the primary design element that makes this city apartment feel like a cabin in the woods. Our team also ensured that every inch was maximised through careful space planning to elevate the concept.

From the woodgrain laminates for the feature wall, ceiling feature, and kitchen island to the wood-looking floor tiles and the wall-to-wall open bookshelves, the living area is a welcoming space that transports one to a cosy stay in a Japanese hot spring town. The interior designer also balanced the wood finishes with white walls and white upholstered furniture to bring lightness to the living area.

The Japanese interior design style requires every detail to be firmly in place. To strengthen the concept, the interior design team introduced shoji doors instead of curtains or blinds. This design idea draws the eye, becoming the star of the living area.

Similarly, a shoji door has been incorporated as the master bathroom door. A customised bathtub takes the spotlight in the bathroom, clad in wood-looking tiles to integrate into the design concept. The concrete-like wall tiles with uneven patterns and the wood-looking bathtub stay true to the wabi sabi design philosophy, which embraces the beauty of simplicity and imperfection. The bathroom becomes the perfect spot for rejuvenation, much like one would enjoy the comfort of the private Japanese onsen.

Throughout the home, the vertical lines of the shoji doors, slatted feature walls, and vertical grains of the laminates enhance the volume of the entire home so that it feels open and spacious. Storage solutions are cleverly hidden within the custom design ideas like the bed frame, kitchen cabinet, and feature walls. Open shelves allow the homeowners to display their treasured books and collectables, adding to the home’s character.
